Carman Pimms at Campbell Farm

From the Campbell Farm board president, Michael Friedline

Our dear friend and colleague in ministry, Carman Pimms at The Campbell Farm in Wapato, passed away unexpectedly in her sleep on Saturday, August 21, 2021.

For the last several years, Carman, a member of the Yakama Nation, has served as Executive Director leading the Farm into active ministry among those in need in and around Wapato.  Her foundation programs were After-School Adventure and Summer Day Camp.  In these she worked with 40-50 kids ages 7-17 providing homework assistance, recreational and Native cultural activities, counseling, feeding, and general nurturing.  As she and her team worked with the kids, they also connected with parents, grand-parents, and school personnel to ensure coordination all for the benefit and growth of the children.  Carman was certified as a doula and assisted in several births.  She pulled together three health service organizations to staff a clinic at the Farm called Ttwaxit to monitor the health and wellness of young women in pregnancy and after.  During Covid, Carman and her team took over the school feeding program delivering meals throughout the greater Wapato area.  In the process, she saw many elders suffering from food insecurity and many homeless camping, so she raised private funds to feed them all.  She and her team would make over 300 meals 4-days a week and them deliver them throughout the community.  Many churches in the Northwest Coast Presbytery have been introduced to The Campbell Farm through sending their young people for a weeks adventure in service learning.  Carman always made time to lead a daily spiritual reflection and debrief experiences.

Carman was nearing completion of her study and excited for becoming a commissioned pastor in the Presbyterian Church.  Her vision for the future was to continue to grow the influence of the Farm as a place of love, safety, and support for the people in her community.  Focused first on the children, Carman looked creatively for opportunities to demonstrate God’s love and abiding care to everyone.  This friend, mother, grandmother, auntie, sister, mentor leaves us all in great sadness for her sudden absence.  We rejoice in her strong and vibrant faith and the promise that we will see her again.

A service honoring her life will be held Monday, August 23rd at 7:00 pm at the Wapato Longhouse, 1153 Donald Wapato Rd., Wapato, WA

Week of Action

On Monday, August 23, the Presbyterian Church (USA) is launching a Week of Action focused on "Shades of Oppression, Resistance, and Liberation."  Monday's focus is on the Middle East.  The day includes two different panel discussions involving partners from Iraq, Syria, and Palestine/Israel.  As well, Scott Parker will be sharing a craft and story segment for children and those who are children at heart--the focus will be on resiliency skills Iraqi and Syrian children refugeed in Lebanon have found useful through the MECC's Strong Kids, Strong Emotions Program.  And the day concludes with a special service of prayer led by a number of our Middle Eastern friends in Lebanon, Syria, and the USA.  Here's the schedule for Monday:
